If you’ve found your way here through the internet maze, you’re either genuinely considering your options for an adventure trip, you’re horribly lost, or you’re simply curious.
Either way, welcome. To be honest, it’s a strange question to attempt to answer – why travel with us? I mean, let’s face it, we know what we do is special. We’re passionate about we do, and when you have that sort of buy-in from every single member of the team, you’re able to create amazing experiences.
There are probably a handful of other companies out there that do the same thing, and plenty that don’t. So it comes down to trust. We make a commitment to you, which means that from the moment you get in touch with us, we’ll create a personalised experience that’s extraordinary and something you’ll remember forever. We never coined the phrase ‘trip of a lifetime’, but our guests sure do like to use it!
So let’s get down to the nuts and bolts. We’ve asked you to place your trust in us – that might be a big ask. It’s probably now that we need to give you some specifics on why, in no particular order…
You’ll be guided by the BEST
We did say ‘in no particular order’, but actually that’s not true. We’re a company built on people and it all hinges on having the most amazing ambassadors giving you the trip of a lifetime. So this is the #1 reason why you should travel with us. We’re very picky about who we choose to guide our trips. So we don’t compromise when it comes to experience, character and local knowledge. Neither should you. And when you drill down, it’s not just the guides, it’s the folk you chat to when you first get in touch with us and it’s all the people behind the scenes that ensure your trip goes off without a hitch.
We’re the real deal
There are a million and one run of the mill tour companies out there. Some of them are ok, some of them are quite good actually, and some are just plain rubbish. No matter who you stack us up against, you can be sure that you’re travelling with a team of wilderness loving folk – which is why we’ve always been able to create such mind blowing trips. Paul – our marketing guy is a triathlete, mountain running dude; Ange – our operations co-ordinator eats, sleeps and dreams about cycling, and Phil our Director is obsessed with all things kayaking. So, it’s fair to say we get it, more than most.
Thousands of Happy People
We’ve been doing this a long time (since the mid-90’s), so we’ve learned a thing or two along the way, earning us the badge of being one of the world’s most experienced and trusted adventure operators. Again, hefty statements. It’s not right to throw those kinds of statements around without justifying them.
There was no one doing what we were doing in New Zealand 20 years ago. That’s why we hold all the concessions to explore the best corners of the country. Actually, there’s no one doing what we do in NZ now!
We didn’t just stumble upon South America either, our founder, Phil, is bilingual and spent years guiding overland, before creating our ‘Active style’ adventures in Peru, Patagonia, Ecuador and Galapagos Islands.
And, you know where we’re going with this, Nepal wasn’t an accident either. Heck, half our staff have hiked in the Himalayas. It’s like a second home to us.
Don’t just take our word for it though, check out our reviews.
Everything is included
We won’t nickel and dime you on our trips. We want every step of the way to be simply outstanding, without having to reach into your pocket. So when you’ve got two screens open and you’re looking at our ‘Rimu’ trip next to another option, please remember that we seriously do cover everything.
Incredible, off the beaten track destinations
We’ll take you to mind blowing places that even the locals don’t know about. Bring along your bucket list (Milford Sound, Machu Picchu, Everest Base Camp, wherever it may be), but just know that you’ll be crossing off other spots you never dreamed of seeing.
OK, so you’ve seen this ‘small groups’ thing bandied around a lot. We get that. Keeping things small means you’ll get to know your fellow travellers and make lifelong friends as you share your adventure together. We travel with no more than 14 (often less) allowing flexibility and freedom to do as much (or as little!) as you like.
Active Adventures Club
We have a very special club, exclusive to those who’ve travelled with us. Once you’re part of our club, you become eligible to receive Active Dollars to put towards a future trip, exclusive offers and extraordinary trip invites.
Legendary Kiwi Hospitality
We’re here to welcome you and make you feel at home with our legendary hospitality. We’re proud of our Kiwi roots and extend this warmth and kindness on our trips around the world. It’s the little things that count and we make it our business to pick up on these things, remember them and act on them. We don’t want to give too much away, but please be assured you’ll be looked after like family.
A Sense of Achievement
Each one of our adventures offers you the opportunity to challenge yourself. Whether you’re new to adventure travel, or you’ve never travelled in a group before, you’ll find yourself arriving home positively different from when you left. How much cooler is it to have hiked to the top of a ridge to see New Zealand’s highest mountain right in front of you, than seeing it from a distance in a souvenir shop? Although, if you do buy a souvenir, get a fluffy Kiwi – they’re cute.
Award Winning Trips
We know what we offer is special and it’s cool to get that seal of approval from some of industry’s heavy hitters. Over the past 20 years we’ve won numerous awards with National Geographic Traveler, NG Adventure, Outside Magazine and Travel + Leisure. And we didn’t even have to take them out for dinner!
We give back
We’re extremely proud to support a grass roots, ‘boots on the ground’ charity founded by our senior guide in Nepal, Dan Keys. It started with the simple goal of building a school library for a small village where many of our porters are from. Now, Active Hearts Himalaya has a life of its own and is something we all feel very strongly about supporting. Here is an insightful and moving video created by our friend Gareth Leonard from Tourist 2 Townie – it sums up the first couple of weeks following the April 2015 earthquake in Nepal.
So there you have it. Thank you for taking the time to hear us out. Place your trust in us!
